How It Saved the Dollar

Because every industrialized country in the world required oil to run its economy, every country suddenly had to accumulate and hold massive reserves of U.S. dollars just to buy energy.

Furthermore, Saudi Arabia agreed to take their surplus oil profits—known as "petrodollars"—and recycle them back into the American economy by purchasing billions of dollars worth of U.S. Treasury bonds. This created a highly stable, self-reinforcing loop that artificially sustained the global dominance of the U.S. dollar, effectively replacing the gold standard with an oil standard.

The 2008 Financial Crisis and Quantitative Easing (QE)

For nearly a century, the Federal Reserve managed the economy using standard tools: adjusting the federal funds rate and changing bank reserve requirements. However, the catastrophic collapse of the housing market and Wall Street investment banks in 2008 forced the Fed into entirely uncharted territory.When the crisis hit, Fed Chairman Ben Bernanke slashed short-term interest rates all the way to zero percent. Despite this, the economy remained completely frozen. Credit markets were paralyzed, and traditional monetary policy was officially out of ammunition.

QE completely transformed the Federal Reserve. Before 2008, the Fed held less than $1 trillion in assets; by the end of the crisis era, its balance sheet had ballooned to over $4.5 trillion.

This experiment permanently rewrote the rules of central banking, making mass liquidity injections a standard crisis-fighting tool for the modern era.

Following nearly two decades of low inflation, the global economy experienced a massive pricing shock in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic. Economists view this era as a perfect storm of an unprecedented demand injection meeting a completely paralyzed global supply chain. [1, 2]

The post-pandemic inflation surge unfolded through two primary engines:

  • To prevent an absolute economic collapse during 2020–2021 lockdowns, the U.S. government injected over $5 trillion in fiscal stimulus directly into the economy via stimulus checks, enhanced unemployment benefits, and business loans. This left American households flooded with trillions in excess savings, generating a massive, immediate wave of consumer demand the moment lockdowns lifted.

  • While demand exploded, the world’s productive capacity was broken. Factories across Asia faced rolling closures, and major shipping ports experienced catastrophic congestion.  Because consumers had massive cash reserves but factories couldn't deliver goods, too much money was chasing too few available products. In 2022, U.S. inflation peaked at a staggering 8%—the highest rate since the early 1980s. While the worst of that initial supply shock has cooled, price pressures have proven remarkably sticky; as of late 2026, U.S. headline inflation hovers around 3.4%, keeping the Federal Reserve on high alert. The absolute global dominance that the U.S. dollar secured at Bretton Woods is facing a quiet, institutional challenge from the BRICS economic bloc (originally Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa, now expanded). Following the 2022 invasion of Ukraine, the U.S. and its Western allies weaponised the global financial system by freezing over $300 billion of Russia's central bank reserves and cutting Russian banks off from the SWIFT messaging network. This sent a chilling message to the Global South: if you run afoul of Washington’s foreign policy, your dollar holdings can vanish overnight. [1, 2]

  • Bypassing the Dollar in Direct Trade: Member states are increasingly invoicing bilateral trade in their own local currencies. For instance, Russia and China now conduct nearly 90% of their mutual trade in yuan and rubles. and Russia settle the vast majority of their oil trade using local currency rails. [1, 2, 3]
  • Alternative Payment Infrastructure:
  • Rather than relying on the U.S.-dominated SWIFT network, BRICS nations are actively linking their national payment networks (such as India's UPI) and developing cross-border digital platforms like mBridge to settle trades instantly outside Western jurisdiction. [1, 2]
  • Diversifying Central Bank Reserves:
  • Central banks globally are gradually moving away from U.S. Treasury bonds. The dollar's share of global foreign exchange reserves has steadily ticked down from roughly 71% in 2000 to approximately 57%-58% today, with reserve managers shifting capital into gold, the euro, the renminbi, and other regional options. The Reality Check

The U.S. dollar is not on the verge of a sudden collapse. It remains deeply entrenched due to the sheer size, safety, and liquidity of the U.S. Treasury market. Most BRICS currencies are not freely convertible, lack deep legal frameworks, and carry capital controls—making global traders hesitant to hold them long-term. [1, 2]Rather than a single replacement currency taking the throne, the modern financial world is moving toward a multipolar, fragmented ecosystem where the dollar remains the largest player, but is no longer the only option available.

If Quantitative Easing (QE) is the process of injecting liquidity into the economy, Quantitative Tightening (QT) is the exact reverse. Following the massive pandemic-era monetary expansion, the Federal Reserve launched QT to shrink its balance sheet and pull excess liquidity out of the financial system.

Unlike a standard interest rate hike, which changes the cost of borrowing money, QT directly reduces the quantity of money in circulation.

How the Fed "Burns" Money

The Fed does not actively sell its trillions of dollars in bonds on the open market, as doing so could cause panic and spike long-term interest rates too aggressively. Instead, it uses a passive method called balance sheet runoff:

  1. The Set Redemption Caps: The Fed sets strict monthly limits (caps) on how much money it will allow to roll off its books—for instance, allowing up to $60 billion in Treasury bonds and $35 billion in Mortgage-Backed Securities (MBS) to mature each month.
  2. The Maturation Phase: When a government bond held by the Fed reaches its maturity date, the U.S. Treasury department pays the principal (face value) of that bond back to the Fed.
  3. The Electronic Deletion: Because the Fed created that money electronically out of thin air during QE to buy the bond, when the Treasury pays it back, the Fed simply marks that electronic cash as deleted. It vanishes from existence.

The Real-World Impact

By letting bonds mature without replacing them, the Fed forces the private sector to step in. The next time the Treasury needs to borrow money, it cannot sell bonds to the Fed; it must sell them to private investors, banks, or foreign governments. This pulls cash out of commercial bank accounts, drains systemic bank reserves, and effectively cools economic demand by restricting the total volume of money floating through the financial ecosystem.

The Triffin Dilemma: The Permanent Burden of the Reserve Currency

Named after Belgian-American economist Robert Triffin in the 1960s, the Triffin Dilemma reveals a fundamental, unfixable contradiction at the heart of running a global reserve currency.It states that the country issuing the world’s primary currency must choose between supporting its own domestic economic health or supplying the global economy with liquidity, but it cannot permanently do both.

The Mechanics of the Contradiction

The only way the rest of the world can get those dollars is if the United States continuously exports more dollars than it imports.
  • The Structural Necessity:
  • To achieve this, the United States is structurally forced to run permanent trade deficits and massive national debts. The U.S. must buy foreign goods and issue massive amounts of Treasury debt just to flood the global market with the greenback liquidity it requires.

Why It Is a Permanent Burden

This creates a dangerous, multi-decade economic trap for the United States:

  • Debt Destruction:
  • Over time, running perpetual trade deficits hollows out domestic manufacturing, as the country imports far more than it produces. Concurrently, issuing endless debt to supply global financial markets balloons the U.S. national debt to increasingly unsustainable levels.
  • The Crisis of Confidence:
  • Eventually, as the national debt grows exponentially to satisfy global demand, foreign nations begin to lose faith in the long-term stability of the dollar. If the debt gets too high, the currency risks a collapse in confidence; if the U.S. pulls back and balances its budget, it starves the world of liquidity, triggering a global economic freeze.

 The Triffin Dilemma is exactly why the United States faces the modern challenges we see today: the very actions required to maintain the dollar's global dominance are the exact forces slowly degrading its domestic financial foundation.

Instead, it allows users to open private, peer-to-peer payment channels where millions of transactions can flash back and forth instantly without clogging the base blockchain.
  • The Trust Mechanism:
  • On mBridge, transactions are immediately validated because the participating central banks mutually trust the BFT consensus rules. On the Lightning Network, trust is entirely unneeded. It uses advanced cryptography called Hashed Timelock Contracts (HTLCs). If a peer tries to cheat or close a payment channel dishonestly, the underlying smart contract automatically confiscates their funds and awards them to the victim on the immutable Bitcoin base layer.
  • Settlement Finality:
  • When a wholesale CBDC moves across mBridge, settlement is instantly final on the ledger in under two seconds.
